The Aseptic Dispensing Unit is located on the Heartlands site, which undertakes aseptic dispensing of medicines under section 10 exemption of The Medicines Act (1968). The unit is responsible for the production of sterile medicines such as; chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody and other high-risk injectable treatments. All products are prepared under strict aseptic (sterile) conditions. Stringent procedures are in place to ensure medicines are prepared to a consistently high standard to provide assurances of product quality and safety.
Some medicines are outsourced from licensed manufacturing units.
The unit is managed by a Chief Technician under the guidance of a named ‘Responsible’ Pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians and assistants are responsible for the aseptic preparation of medicines.
The unit works in collaboration with the Oncology/Haematology team based in the Satellite Pharmacy on Ward 19, working closely with the nursing and medical staff in coordinating patient treatment to ensure a high standard of care is delivered in a near-patient environment.
