The pharmacy department at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) has many exciting opportunities to offer individuals looking for a career within the Trust.
The department has a flexible attitude towards working hours for its staff. Requests are dealt with individually and according to service requirements. Current working patterns include full-time(37.5 hours/week), part-time, term-time, annualised hours.
The pharmacy departments at HEFT are based on the 3 main sites and include dispensaries with robotic dispensing and robotic ward box fill, an Aseptic Dispensing Unit, satellite pharmacies supporting oncology and haematology patients, a satellite pharmacy for cystic fibrosis medication, a dedicated medications research team based at MIDRU , education and training team and a ward-based medicines management service.
Audit and practice research
To ensure best practice, we encourage both audit and practice research and work closely with fellow healthcare professionals (e.g. consultant physicians, senior nurses and governance leads).
Practice research papers have been presented at national conferences and we have a good track record in the annual pre-registration pharmacist regional audit competition.
Through our teacher practitioner, we have developed close links with the School of Pharmacy at Aston University. This includes both on-site learning visits and the supervision of a number of final year MPharm projects, which gives us greater potential to develop our audit and practice research ability.
Education and Training
All technical staff within the department are supported by a team of pharmacy technicians who are dedicated to providing and supporting education and training for all grades of staff. As well as supporting staff development the team also enhance any operational developments by designing competency-based training packages where required.

Continuing Professional Development
From pre-registration trainee pharmacists to consultant level practice – the clinical section is keen to support the development of our pharmacists, from attendance to national conferences to formal qualification – and this goes for our technicians as well, who are part of our clinical teams. We also support in-house teaching and sharing of clinical experiences across the teams.
We are involved in several national CPD developments, including developing several CPPE ‘Learning at Lunch’ modules with the University of Manchester, and several pharmacists have been invited speakers at trust-wide, regional and national invents events.
To improve medication safety, clinical staff provide formal teaching to several groups of fellow healthcare professionals. This includes nurses (e.g. Trust intravenous drug administration training days) and juniors doctors (e.g. FY1 and FY2)
Life outside of Pharmacy
The pharmacy team at HEFT enjoy each other’s company and regular social events are held including monthly walks organised by ROPAF (Ramblers Of Pharmacy And Friends), Touch Rugby and 6-aside football teams. There are always nights out to celebrate birthdays, weddings etc.
In the wider Trust, Trust Balls are held bi-annually.
